Olympic Plaza

Saturday, August 6, 2022

Since 2013, the CALGARY FLOATING LANTERNS PEACE CEREMONY has brought the beauty and tranquility of the floating lanterns to Olympic Plaza. It is a multi-cultural, multi-faith event in Calgary to commemorate the lives lost in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki; to make a renewed commitment to the abolition of nuclear weapons; and to recognize the Mayors for Peace initiative.

Join us on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Olympic Plaza.

Our Peace Ceremony has always been a time for reflecting on the injustices of this world and renewing our resolve for a more peaceful future. This is an opportunity to support each other and show just how many people there are that want to change the world for the better and support nonviolent conflict resolution. We need not repeat the mistakes of the past. We must learn and find peace within ourselves so that we may shine to those around us.

EVENING PROGRAM – details to come

Rental Tents

There will be 2 rental tents set up, with individually pre-packaged lanterns. Rental tents will open at 6pm and close by 9pm. We accept different payments including cash, debit, and most major credit cards.

Lanterns are available for rent and will be collected from the pool for re-use at the end of the night.

If you wish you rent your lantern ahead of time, you will receive a lantern that can be personalized with your name. the name of your loved one, or a special quote/wish for peace. Your donations are greatly appreciated and will help to keep this event going.

Please note that all lanterns are for rental only. After the lanterns are launched on the water, they are collected by our volunteers at the end of the night to make sure that we don’t leave any trace behind. The lanterns are then re-used year after year to minimize the environmental impacts of our event.

We are a group of diverse people that wish to educate the public on the dangers of nuclear weapons so that we may all work together to find non violent means to conflict. The floating lanterns are a beautiful tradition that allows us to remember the past and reflect on how we may each do our part to create a peaceful future.

Please check back for more program details as we get closer to the day!
